WASHINGTON, September 26, 2012 – Zainab Al-Suwaij, Executive Director of the American Islamic Congress (AIC) will represent her organization at the 67th United Nations General Assembly in New York City, Sept. 26-28. The General Assembly will set the United Nations agenda for the upcoming year and will focus specifically on rule of law.

Al-Suwaij’s attendance at the General Assembly session represents the first step in AIC’s United Nations membership. She will attend several high-level meetings in addition to the General Assembly and will speak with other UN members on strengthening rule of law in the Middle East and North Africa.

In April 2012, AIC was approved by the United Nations for association with its Department of Public Information (DPI). DPI selects NGOs for association to enhance outreach to civil society advocates who play an active role in working with the United Nations in promoting peace, democracy, development and human rights.

The association with DPI demonstrates AIC’s commitment to disseminate information and raise public awareness about the purposes and activities of the UN and issues of global concern. Due to the stringent criteria of the approval process only twenty-nine NGOs were approved for association with DPI this past spring.

The American Islamic Congress is a civil-rights organization promoting tolerance and the exchange of ideas among Muslims and between other peoples. The 501(c)3 organization leads initiatives around the world and has offices in Washington, Boston, Egypt, Tunisia and Iraq. Visit http://aic.craftedenterprises.com for more additional information.
