chaimaeChaimae Mechtaly is a self-taught oil painter and Morocco native of both Muslim and Jewish lineage. Chaimae’s diverse interests include exploring North Africa’s ethnic and religious diversity, upending stereotypical portraits of Muslim female identity, and preserving the art and culture of Morocco’s native Amazigh Jews. Chaimae’s most recent collection, “Portraits of Lost History” exhibited at Brandeis University, where she is an undergraduate. Her forthcoming series of paintings combines portraits of 20th-century icons with Amazigh-inspired visual patterns.
